Associate Professor Steven Howard
Co-Head of Postgraduate Studies
School of Education, University of Wollongong
Confessions of an HDR Supervisor
When I commenced my own Higher Degree Research journey, I anticipated a straightforward path to graduation and into my chosen profession. Reality had other plans for me. There were times of buoyant accomplishment, and others of seemingly insurmountable challenges. At various times I felt overburdened by all I was being asked to do, or I felt stagnant as I semi-patiently awaited advice, feedback or approvals. I focused highly on some things, at the exclusion of others. Fast forward 10 years later: I supervise 13 HDR students, I have supervised 13 others to completion and I am a Head of Postgraduate Research for UOW’s School of Education. I have learned much from these roles and students – perhaps more than they have benefitted from me. I see that some of those early decisions served me well, although these were just as often incidental as intentional. Others were less beneficial, and I have had to work hard to redress. In this presentation I will pull back the curtain on HDR Supervision to discuss the all-too-often-unspoken things that I believe many PhD students can benefit from understanding. I certainly would have.

Student research presentations
A highlight of the day are the presentations by research students from across NSW, this year, online. This gives people from studying at any distance - across the city, or across the world - to participate, as presenters or as an audience. Presenters need to be currently enrolled in a NSW university. This could be you!
Details of the presentation: 20 min presentation with 5 slides (no more!) + 10 mins for discussion. |
Beth Southwell Award: one rep per uni
Each year, this is awarded for an outstanding PhD thesis. Each university in NSW can nominate their most outstanding thesis (one only) for consideration of this award. The award will be announced at the Showcase. More here

Crazy cup ‘cocktails’
By the end of the day, you will be ready to sit back and enjoy some time with your old and new colleagues! Bring a crazy cup of your favourite beverage to the final Zoom event on conference day for an opportunity to connect socially with education research students from around NSW. There will be a novelty commendation for craziest cup and an opportunity for purposive networking as well as the traditional conference socialising.
